International Mother Language Day
21st February is our Mother Language Day. It is a memorable day in the national history of Bangladesh. It turned into the International Mother Language Day when it was recognized by the UNESCO on the 17th November, 1999. It has become a red letter day in our history. The day has a historical background. The then Governor General of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah said, “Urdu and Urdu shall be the state language of Pakistan.” This declaration raised the storm of protest in the mind of the people and the students of East Pakistan. On 21st February 1952, in the rally police killed lots of people like Salam, Barkat, Rafiq, Shaflq and Jabbar. Every year on this day, people from all walks of life come to the martyrs’ monument and offer their respect. They put on black badges on their clothes. Hundreds of people walk bare-footed and gather in front of the Shaheed Minar with flowers. The government, different organizations and institutions arrange programmes to celebrate the day. Newspapers publish special supplements on this day. It is our national holiday. Schools, colleges and offices remain closed on this day. Our national flag is kept hoisted half mast on this day. Actually, the day possesses a great significance for the whole nation as well as the whole world.

২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারি আমাদের মাতৃভাষা দিবস। বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় ইতিহাসে এটি একটি স্মরণীয় দিন। এটি আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসে পরিণত হয় যখন এটি ১৭ ই নভেম্বর, ১৯৯৯ সালে ইউনেস্কো কর্তৃক স্বীকৃত হয়। এটি আমাদের ইতিহাসে একটি স্মরণীয় দিবসে পরিণত হয়েছে। দিবসটির একটি ঐতিহাসিক প্রেক্ষাপট রয়েছে। পাকিস্তানের তৎকালীন গভর্নর জেনারেল মোহাম্মদ আলী জিন্নাহ বলেছিলেন, "উর্দু এবং উর্দু হবে পাকিস্তানের রাষ্ট্রভাষা।" এই ঘোষণা পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের জনগণ ও ছাত্রদের মনে প্রতিবাদের ঝড় তুলেছিল। ১৯৫২ সালের ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারি সমাবেশে পুলিশ সালাম, বরকত, রফিক, শফিক, জব্বারের মতো অসংখ্য মানুষকে হত্যা করে। প্রতি বছর এই দিনে সর্বস্তরের মানুষ শহীদ স্মৃতিস্তম্ভে এসে শ্রদ্ধা জানান। তারা তাদের পোশাকে কালো ব্যাজ ধারণ করে। শত শত মানুষ খালি পায়ে হেঁটে ফুল নিয়ে শহীদ মিনারের সামনে জড়ো হয়। সরকার, বিভিন্ন সংগঠন ও প্রতিষ্ঠান দিবসটি উদযাপনে নানা কর্মসূচির আয়োজন করে। সংবাদপত্রগুলি এই দিনে বিশেষ প্রতিবেদন প্রকাশ করে। এটি আমাদের জাতীয় ছুটির দিন। এদিন স্কুল, কলেজ ও অফিস বন্ধ থাকে। এই দিনে আমাদের জাতীয় পতাকা অর্ধনমিত রাখা হয়। প্রকৃতপক্ষে, দিনটি সমগ্র জাতির পাশাপাশি সমগ্র বিশ্বের জন্য একটি মহান তাৎপর্য বহন করে।
