VALUE OF TIME
Time is life and life is time. Time is more valuable than health and wealth. It is an important factor in our life. The moment it ends, he leaves this world forever.
"Art is long, but time is short." Our life is nothing but a sum-total (সমষ্টি) of hours, days and years. Time once gone is gone forever. Man has a lot of duties to perform during his short span of life. Newton says, "One life is not enough for a man to finish his work." We cannot call back our lost time even with all the wealth of the world.
Many are the evils of wasting time. To waste time means to shorten life. Wasting time is a great crime. It is like committing suicide (আত্মহত্যা). It leads a man to miseries and ruin. Idleness is the root of all evils. "An-idle brain is the Devil's workshop" goes a well-known saying. Nepolean lost the Battle of Waterloo for the failure (ব্যর্থ হওয়া) of his general to reach in the nick of time. There goes a well-knwon saying, "Time and tide wait for none."
Students are the future hope and strength of a nation. Their life is the life of preparation- preparation for the struggle of life. This is why, time is most valuable to them. They should act upon the maxims-"As you so, so will you reap." and "A stitch in time saves nine".
All the great men of the world made the best use of their time. They left their footprints on the sands of time by making proper use of their time. It is true in the case of nations too.
The proper use of time is the secret (মূলমন্ত্র) of success in life. Our motto (লক্ষ্য) of doing work should be "Now and not tomorrow." It is because tomorrow is not workless. We should, therefore-"Take the time by the forelock."
A sense of punctuality of using time is a great blessing. We must do the right thing at the right time. To quote a proverb, "Hit the iron while it is hot". We should not put off anything for tomorrow what we can do today. It is because many an undesirable situation may crop up tomorrow and upset everything. It is therefore wise for us to 'Make hay when the sun shines'. The poet also says-"Trust no future, however pleasant; Act, act in the living present."
Thus we find that our success and happiness in life depend on the proper use of time. We should all follow the maxim minutely- "Work while you work, play while you play. And that is the way to be happy and gay."
